They say June 21st is the happiest day of the year - Summer Solstice. I started the 50 mile Big Horn Mountain Trail Run at 6:00 a.m. after a nearly 2 hour bus ride at 3:15 from Sheridan, Wyoming to a mountain pass and aid station called Dry Fork. Weezyl was finishing up the 100 miler a few hours later.

(Wedge tearing it up)
nothing to report, really...we got to the campground and there were no sites.
we petitioned the park superintendent for a group site and were successful because: 1) we are an organization and 2) the same ranger talked me onto the trail via cell phone when I was lost on the Sauratown Loop 4 years ago...
This year Promise Land was my first truly long run of 2008 with temps above 80 and 100% humidity, not what I had expected for a day in spring in the mountains of Virginia. But I needed to move as fast as I could to cover 31.75M with 8K' elevation gain and loss...after having rain the night before, then sun and steam and sweat until finally getting hit by the rain again as race day was ending...packing up camp got to be as much fun as setting it up...it was great.

Now upon us is a great awakening of “green” technologies and ream after ream of printed documents on the subject of sustainable growth. While I do believe these efforts hold some promise for human future it concerns me that one day I might look up to find a beautifully arranged “green” development where once there was a lovely forest. As a trail runner, the question I keep asking is what do you see when you look at a forest – a resource potentially managed for sustainable development or, simply, a forest?
Three videos were rolling throughout the event and we have some great footage. It has been encoded and will appear online later in the week.
Possible Trail Running Clinics - coming in July. More details to come, but this is an answer to many queries about learning more about the forest and the trails. Stay tuned.
We're so very thankful that you dropped by for a little fun in the forest! We're interested in your feedback. You can email us anytime at pwtr[at]mail.trailheads.org.
We had a great weekend of course tours. About 20 runners came out to check out the course Saturday. Others toured the course Sunday. Some got lost. All were found. We saw at least 2 blacksnakes. We'll tighten up our act for this Saturday's tours and keep you on track.
The course is marked. Yellow montrail markers on the 7K and pink on the 15K. Keep the markers on your right. When you come to an intersection, look up. Do not assume the runner in front of you is making the right choice. Remember 15K runners repeat the first 2 miles (ish) of the course, meaning that on the return yellow Montrail markers will be on your left.
5.12.08 Update: oh dear...registration is closed. THANKS for the incredible response!
