In case you have not already heard about the special Thirsty Thursday today, we will meet at 5:00pm in the Unity Church parking lot for the regular Thirsty Thursday run, but with the added bonus of our new friend Tres from Montrail present with many Masochists to share. We will head out for the five mile Thirsty Thursday loop at 5:15pm. Return to the cars a little after 6pm and then casually head over to Tyler's for drink's and dinner. Jason and I will be present from Bull City Running Company and we might just have some giveaways.
Hope you will join in the festivities and invite a new friend. Show off your brand new Masochists if you already have a pair. Bring other trail shoes to compare and offer feedback to Tres. He's hungry to get to know us Trailhead folk. (Oh yeah--he's from Asheville, so we like him already).
Sustain Foundation is hosting Community TrailFest to launch the new Chapel Hill and Carrboro trail guides Sunday, April 26, 2009, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro, N.C., in conjunction with Weaver Street Market’s jazz brunch.
The event will feature trail experts from Sustain Foundation along with information from organizations and businesses that support the well-being of the community and the environment. The event is free and open to the public.
Twelve trail guides have been created which provide a map of each trail’s route and information about the length, difficulty, surface and restrictions. The guides also provide facts about the history, ecology and current use of the trail to educate the community about Chapel Hill/Carrboro’s natural spaces with the goal of promoting conservation. In addition, a comprehensive map has been created with the locations of all 12 trails overlaid on a map of the area showing roads, bikeways and greenways.
TrailHeads will have an information table about the trails and trail running. Sign-up sheets for Philosopher's Way Trail Runs registration will also be available.
Squonk has been asked to speak for a few minutes on the merits of trail running and how the local forest reaches into our lives in many ways, obvious, and less so.
Come on out! Stop by the TrailHeads table and chat with us about playing in the local forest and trail running hither and yon.

Scott "Bean" Brockmeier wrote recently with news of the loss of one of our trail friends, his running companion, Sierra.
Seems most humans downplay the loss of a dog ("well...she was just a dog"), but this grief is incredibly painful. Bean and Sierra shared hundreds, if not thousands of miles and hours together. Sierra was always well-behaved and eager to join the fun with our group in Carrboro and Chapel Hill.
We'll add her name to the roster of friends scribed in a book called, Just Dogs. She's in good company with Eli, Flynn, Baron, Pumpkin, Kiss, Rufus, and others...
Our sympathies, Bean....(this is going to really hurt for awhile)...
...run free, Sierra!

What's all the rage about the Uwharrie Mountain Runs? [8, 20, or 40 milers]
Well, it's fun and this year it's on GROUNDHOG DAY! 2/02/08.
Nice to see that an abundance of TrailHeads will enjoy the course again this year to defend its team winning status.
For those of you who have yet to enjoy this event, i've uploaded a little video that we shot with the TrailHeadCam in 2003. We journeyed down there to tape a section of the course - goofus, twisted, prince, wackus, and I.
The movie may take a minute to load. It's streaming as quicktime and QT is required.
Imagine it without leaves...you can see out beyond the ridges...
