First there was the Pumpkin Trail Run, then The Vine, then The Carrboro 50k, and now the TrailHeads announce a new trail race in Chapel Hill's Carolina North Forest.
This year Promise Land was my first truly long run of 2008 with temps above 80 and 100% humidity, not what I had expected for a day in spring in the mountains of Virginia. But I needed to move as fast as I could to cover 31.75M with 8K' elevation gain and loss...after having rain the night before, then sun and steam and sweat until finally getting hit by the rain again as race day was ending...packing up camp got to be as much fun as setting it up...it was great.

Now upon us is a great awakening of “green” technologies and ream after ream of printed documents on the subject of sustainable growth. While I do believe these efforts hold some promise for human future it concerns me that one day I might look up to find a beautifully arranged “green” development where once there was a lovely forest. As a trail runner, the question I keep asking is what do you see when you look at a forest – a resource potentially managed for sustainable development or, simply, a forest?
